Charles Lewis Tiffany opened his New York stationery and gift shop in 1837 with $1,000 borrowed from his father, later turning to fine jewelry and introducing the English sterling silver standard to America in 1851. In 1845 he chose a distinctive robin's-egg hue for his Blue Book catalogue, a shade later trademarked as Tiffany Blue.
Today the house is synonymous with its Fifth Avenue flagship and the Tiffany Blue Box, alongside signature designs like the Tiffany Setting engagement ring, celebrated for setting the benchmark in American fine jewelry and silver.
