Founded in Florence in 1970 by designer Roberto Cavalli, the house made its name that same year by patenting an original technique for printing directly onto leather and suede. His 1972 runway debut at Palazzo Pitti introduced patchwork denim and leather pieces that broke sharply from Italian fashion's more conservative mainstream.
