Max Mara was founded in 1951 by Achille Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy, with the ambition of bringing American-style industrial production to European couture — effectively creating Italian prêt-à-porter. The name combines "Max", a superlative, with "Mara", a diminutive of the founder's surname.
From its earliest collections, Max Mara made outerwear its signature, and its camel coat has become one of fashion's most enduring investment pieces. The house has since grown into a family of more than 30 labels, while its core womenswear collection remains defined by quiet, timeless elegance.
