Pierre Balmain opened his own fashion house in Paris in 1945, quickly earning acclaim for a boldly feminine style built on nipped-in waists, richly embroidered fabrics and sculpted, statuesque silhouettes that stood apart from the utilitarian fashions of the postwar years.

The house dressed icons from Ava Gardner to Brigitte Bardot in its early decades, and under successive creative directors has continued to champion strong-shouldered tailoring and glamorous eveningwear, earning a devoted following among a new generation.
